Road Running Ramblings - Apr16

by Road Running Manager - 10:26 on 30 April 2016

Welcome to the April Road Running Blog and hopefully the end of Winter as we celebrate the Winter League of 2015/16 tonight, I'm looking forward to some good food and remembering some of the fun we had over the winter season.  Then we can move on a concentrate on the summer!

We have already had 2 races in the summer champs and there has been a good turnout for both. We were really lucky with the weather for the Brydekirk run and to be fair John & Jean managed to hold off the hail and sleet at Hightae until we were all safely back indoors!

On the Summer Reports page I have provided some information on various course records for the boys and the girls - these date back to 2003 and are generally for the current courses unless noted otherwise. There are some cracking times there to aim for!

Congratulations to our members who have been running other events around the country - Edinburgh 10miles, Blackpool half and full marathon and the various hill/fell runs.  Condolences also to Elaine Walton who gave her best shot for the London marathon but unfortunately injury struck and she had to pull out - we hope to see you back running soon.  Best wishes to Alan Crighton, Peter Grant & Adrian Walker in their Highland Fling attempts today - I hope the weather is kind to you.

Membership renewals are arriving in a steady stream, thank you to all who have sent them in.  PLEASE can those still to do so try and get these in as soon as possible - when our club acceditation is done the number of paid up members gives us more status and could possibly even be the difference in getting an extra club place at London or other events!  I will start to highlight runners who have paid up in the race results after Holywood 5 miles!!

Training Tip

Are you pointing in the right direction? Sounds like an obvious question regarding your running but are you putting all of your efforts into going forwards?  Carry out a review of all moving parts in your running technique:

  • Feet placement - do you feet point forwards? If your feet are slightly out-turned or inturned you are effectively losing an inch or so of forward progress with each stride.  By pointing forwards you maximise every stride into forward progress.
  • Arm swing - the way you swing your arms when running can add or deract to your momentum - wildly swinging left and right will require your body to counteract this to keep your balance which burns energy. If you can drive your arms parallel with your direction it will contribute to your forward motion and increase your speed.

Motivation Quote

Time for a fun quote!  When I'm struggling on a hill run I sometimes think to myself "What would SClub7 do?"  and the answer is always:

"Don't Stop, Never Give Up, Hold Your Head High & Reach The Top!"
